HISTORY OF THE DEXTER BREED
The Dexter originated in the Southwestern region of Ireland where they were originally kept by small landholders and known as the “poor man’s cow”.
Like the Kerry breed, they are descended from the predominately black cattle of the early Celts.
The breed virtually disappeared in Ireland but was still maintained as a pure breed in a number of small herds in England and the US.
Basic genetic in Dexters
Gregor Mendel, a 19th century Monk, was born in 1822 in Austria.
Mendel conducted experiments with pea plants that led to some of the founding principles of genetics and theories of heredity.
One of his methods, known as Mendel’s Square, can be applied to some of the basic characteristics we often come across in our Dexters. Below we will be dealing with colour, horn status, Chondrodysplasia and Beta Casein. All of these can quite easily be determined by making use of Mendel’s Square by placing one parent’s genes on the vertical axis and the other parent’s genes on the horizontal axis.
BOSVELDER SHEEP
The Bosvelder was developed by crossbreeding the Pedi with the Van Rooy & Dorper sheep. The ideal composition is 50% Pedi, 25% Dorper, and 25% Van Rooy.
The most important characteristic of the Pedi is their adaptability to the harsh conditions of the Limpopo bushveld (defined by tick-borne diseases such as heartwater) which could also produce a quality carcass. Selection for adaptability, hardiness, fertility, flock instinct, mothering abilities, and longevity, along with improved conformation and increased weaning weight, is of paramount importance.
